CCSS and Text Complexity

Ensuring appropriate text complexity is essential so that students advance through the grades in their reading comprehension skills. Many high school graduates have difficulty transitioning from high school to college and careers, in part due to a significant reading gap that may have formed between the text complexity to which they were exposed in school, and the text complexity presented in college and workforce materials.

The Common Core State Standards set the expectations that students will read more and more complex texts in each grade level. When students learn to comprehend more and more complex texts, they will be ready for college and careers by the time they graduate from high school.

LTS Education Systems ensures that literary and informational texts within our products are appropriately complex at each grade level. We evaluate all passages with readability measures, ensuring that each passage is within the grade-level range.

In addition, as required by the CCSS, our products include both literary and informational texts across a variety of topics and genres. All vocabulary in the passages and in the assessment questions are grade-level appropriate.

In combination, these development guidelines ensure that all texts within the LTS Education Systems products are aligned to the Common Core State Standards goals of helping every student be College and Career Ready.
